Mark’s journey began in 1978 while attending Saint John’s University in central Minnesota. He was originally interested in painting but after taking a ceramics class, he was drawn to clay. He said, “It simply felt right.” In 1981, Mark had an opportunity to travel to central France where he worked in the historic pottery village of La Borne. It was there he had his first experience firing wood-burning kilns. Mark was immediately seduced by the process and results from these kilns. Returning home in 1983, he sought an apprenticeship with Todd Piker at Cornwall Bridge Pottery. In 1988, Mark moved to Cambridge, Wisconsin where he opened his own pottery, Cambridge Wood Fire Pottery. You can see more of his work at https://cambridgepottery.com/ or on his Etsy shop.
